Biography:
Assistant Professor James Yao-Ming Shih is the department chief and senior attending of the Acute Trauma & Surgical Critical Care Unit, Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Dr. Shih was a Bachelor graduate in both Biochemistry and Microbiology from the University of Maryland, USA in 1994. He later pursuit his interest in medicine in the Philippines and graduated with his MD from the Fatima College of Medicine in 2001. After undergoing residency trainings in general surgery and cardiovascular surgery, he took up fellowships in vascular surgery, acute trauma care, and surgical critical care medicine at Cathay General Hospital, Taipei City, Taiwan. In 2017, he obtained his PhD in Clinical Nutrition from the Taipei Medical University and undertook short-term clinical fellowships in surgical intensive care and nutrition at Klinikum St. Georg, Leipzig, Germany and at Rabin Medical Centre, Petah Tikva, Israel. In 2018, he received his assistant professor status in the Institute of Human Metabolism & Obesity at Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan.
Dr. Shih is board certified in cardiovascular surgery, trauma critical care and surgical intensive care medicine. His area of practice includes post-surgical and trauma critical care, perioperative acute heart failure with ECMO support system, E-CPR and TTM and metabolic care bundles for neuroinflammation modulation, organ support systems with VV-ECMO and CRRT, adult critical care nutrition including TPN implementation, and elderly nutrition. His interests are in disease metabolism and metabolic approach (metabolic care) to the deranged metabolic stress associated with organ failures during the acute phase of illness.
